A Historic Gem Reimagined for Today
Originally opened on October 27, 1939, The State Theatre quickly became one of Shelby’s most admired architectural landmarks. With its striking Art Deco façade and beautifully designed interior, it drew praise from locals and visitors alike—one newspaper proudly calling it “one of the most strikingly beautiful building fronts of the modern day.”
For decades, The State was a beloved small-town movie house. Like many classic theaters across America, it eventually faced the pressures of changing times—suburban growth, mall culture, and the rise of home entertainment. Renamed The Flick in its later years, the theater ultimately went dark and sat vacant for nearly 30 years.

A Community Revival
Its story didn’t end there. Thanks to the passion and vision of a dedicated group of volunteers, Destination Cleveland County, the theater was brought back to life. With strong support from the City of Shelby, the once-silent building underwent a remarkable transformation and was reborn as The Don Gibson Theater, honoring Shelby native and legendary songwriter Don Gibson.
Today, this restored Art Deco treasure stands as a testament to what community, creativity, and preservation can achieve.
JAZZ, COUNTRY, BLUES, COMEDY, ROCK & ROLL, BLUEGRASS, VINTAGE FILM SERIES AND EVERYTHING IN BETWEEN. YOU’LL SEE IT ALL HERE AT THE DON GIBSON THEATRE.
An Unforgettable Live Music Experience
Now a 400-seat, state-of-the-art concert venue, the Don Gibson Theater offers an intimate and acoustically rich setting for unforgettable performances. We welcome an exceptional lineup of nationally touring musicians—Grammy winners, chart-toppers, and artists whose songs have become part of the soundtrack of American music.
We also showcase rising talent from Nashville, New York, Austin, and beyond. Many artists who perform here are the names you’ll be hearing everywhere next year, and there’s nothing quite like discovering them first in a venue where every seat feels close to the stage.
